Adult Gymnastics in the UK: How to Get Started

MAG & WAG

In brief

Many UK clubs run adult-specific recreational classes, which give adult beginners a lower-pressure way to build strength, flexibility and basic skills without competing against much younger, more experienced gymnasts.

Key takeaways

  • Many UK clubs and leisure centres run adult-only classes, usually for beginners and improvers, so adults aren't training alongside young competitive gymnasts.
  • Most adult gymnastics is recreational, but British Gymnastics runs an Adult Gymnastics British Championships for anyone 18 or over in the year of competition.
  • The 2026 Championships, at Lilleshall in June, offered artistic, trampoline, tumbling and acrobatic events at four levels, from introductory to 'pro'.
  • The same safety rules on clothing and jewellery apply to adults as to children.

Gymnastics isn’t only for children — a growing number of UK clubs and leisure centres run classes specifically for adults, with no prior experience assumed. British Gymnastics has its own adult gymnastics programme for people trying the sport for the first time or returning to it.

Finding an adult class

Not every club offers adult sessions, so ask specifically when contacting a club — see choosing a gymnastics club for what else to check. Adult classes are often in the evening, and are typically pitched at beginners and improvers. As with children’s classes, clubs usually ask regular participants to join the national governing body, which includes insurance.

What to expect

Adult classes are typically built around developing strength, flexibility and basic apparatus skills progressively, in a group of adults of similar experience, rather than expecting participants to keep up with young competitive gymnasts. Most are non-competitive by design. You don’t need a background in gymnastics, dance or sport: prior flexibility or strength training helps, but classes are generally designed for genuine beginners.

The safety rules are the same for adults as for children: British Gymnastics’ dress code and jewellery policy apply to all participants, so fitted clothing, bare feet or gym slippers, and no jewellery. See what to wear to a first class.

If you want to compete: the Adult British Championships

British Gymnastics runs an Adult Gymnastics British Championships. The 2026 edition was held at Lilleshall National Sports Centre on 12–14 June 2026. According to the competition handbook:

  • it’s open to anyone who is 18 or over in the year of competition, whatever their experience — the handbook pitches it at people “looking to take your first steps in gymnastics or get back into the sport”;
  • there are four disciplines — artistic, trampoline, tumbling and acrobatic — and gymnasts can enter more than one;
  • events are split by level — introductory, novice, intermediate and pro — and by age band, from over-18 up to over-50 in some events;
  • teams have three to six gymnasts, with at least two ability levels in each team;
  • competitors need at least Community membership of British Gymnastics (previously called Bronze), and their lead coach must hold at least a Level 2 qualification.

The handbook also includes an age bonus: within each age band, competitors receive a small bonus that rises with age — in the artistic events, from 0.1 at 21 up to 0.9 at 29, before resetting in the next band.

The handbook describes a “big social element” to the event. Competing is entirely optional — most adult participation remains recreational class work.
