British Artistic Gymnastics Championships Explained
In brief
Key takeaways
- The British Championships are British Gymnastics' national championship, deciding the UK's senior and junior titles.
- Gymnasts qualify through the domestic pathway, usually by reaching a minimum all-around score at a qualifying competition.
- The event combines qualification with the all-around competition, followed by separate apparatus finals.
- In 2026, in Liverpool, Ruby Evans and Joe Fraser won the senior all-around titles.
The British Championships are the UK’s own national title event, separate from — and a feeder into — Great Britain’s international representation.
Who competes
The British Championships are open to UK-based gymnasts who have qualified through the domestic pathway, rather than being an invited squad picked in advance — and qualification is competitive, not automatic. Senior gymnasts typically need to have reached a minimum all-around score (British Gymnastics has used a 41.50 threshold in recent cycles) at a qualifying competition such as a Home Nations Championships, a regional FIG-recognised competition or the Club Team Championships, and the senior field is capped at roughly 54 gymnasts. Junior and espoir (pre-junior) age groups compete alongside the senior event.
Gymnasts from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compete together here, and results feed into selection conversations for Great Britain’s international teams.
Format
The event runs as a combined qualification and all-around competition, followed by separate apparatus finals — the same all-around and apparatus logic used internationally, adapted for an individually entered domestic field rather than national teams. Separate all-around rankings are kept for each age group, including senior and junior women and senior and under-18 men.
The 2026 Championships
The 2026 British Championships were held in Liverpool in March. The senior all-around titles went to:
| Senior women | Score | Senior men | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Ruby Evans | 53.35 | 1. Joe Fraser | 84.50 |
| 2. Ruby Stacey | 52.65 | 2. Jonas Rushworth | 80.90 |
| 3. Shantae-Eve Amankwaah | 51.80 | 3. Jake Jarman | 80.55 |
The men’s totals are much higher because men compete on six apparatus and women on four. Both champions went on to international success later in the year: Evans won floor gold for Wales at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, and Fraser was part of Great Britain’s European team champions in Zagreb.
Where it sits in the calendar
The British Championships run as part of British Gymnastics’ own domestic season, alongside regional and level-specific competitions that make up the wider UK pathway — see British Gymnastics pathways and levels. In recent years the event has been held in spring, around late March.
