How Gymnasts Qualify for Olympic Finals
In brief
Key takeaways
- At the Games, every gymnast performs once in qualification, and those scores decide the team final, the all-around final and each apparatus final.
- A country may send at most two gymnasts into the all-around final and two into each apparatus final.
- For LA 2028, 12 teams per discipline qualify: the top three from the 2026 World Championships team final, then nine more from the 2027 World Championships.
- Individual places come from the 2027 Worlds, the 2028 Apparatus World Cup series and the 2028 continental championships.
“Olympic qualification” means two different things: how gymnasts win a place at the Games in the first place, and how they qualify from the opening round into the finals once they’re there. This page covers both.
Part 1: Getting to the Games (LA 2028)
The FIG’s qualification system for Los Angeles 2028 allocates 96 places per discipline. Team places go to the National Olympic Committee, which chooses the five gymnasts; most individual places are won by a named gymnast.
| Route | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 World Championships team final — top three teams | 3 teams (15 gymnasts) | 3 teams (15 gymnasts) |
| 2027 World Championships team qualification — next nine teams | 9 teams (45 gymnasts) | 9 teams (45 gymnasts) |
| 2027 Worlds — one individual place for each of the next three countries | 3 | 3 |
| 2027 Worlds all-around — by name, one per country | 8 | 14 |
| 2027 Worlds apparatus finals — one per apparatus, by name | 6 | 4 |
| 2028 Apparatus World Cup series — two per apparatus, by name | 12 | 8 |
| 2028 continental championships — one per continent, by name | 5 | 5 |
| Host country and universality places | 2 | 2 |
Gymnasts from countries that qualify a full team can’t also win individual places through the all-around and apparatus routes, and a country without a team can send no more than three individual gymnasts. The 2026 World Championships in Rotterdam are therefore the first chance to secure a team place for LA 2028.
Part 2: From qualification to the finals
Once at the Games, everyone competes in one qualification session, and that single score is used three ways:
- Team final — the team’s best three scores on each apparatus are added together, and the top eight teams advance.
- All-around final — each gymnast’s total across every apparatus; the top 24 advance.
- Apparatus finals — each gymnast’s score on one apparatus; the top eight on each advance. Vault finalists need two vaults.
The two-per-country rule
To stop the strongest nations filling an entire final, no more than two gymnasts per country can advance to the all-around final, and no more than two to each apparatus final — however many scored well enough. That’s why a gymnast can rank, say, fifth in qualification and still miss the final if two team-mates scored higher.
The two-per-country limit has applied since the 2004 Athens Olympics; earlier Games, including Sydney 2000, allowed three per country into these finals.
See team, all-around and apparatus finals for how each final works.
